What Low Carb Foods Are Exactly
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

All food except meat and fat contain carbohydrates. The word carbohydrates consists of the elements of which they are comprised. Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are two kinds of carbohydrates, simple and complex. While both forms must be limited when choosing low carb foods, we must not consider completely eliminating either type of carbohydrates for health reasons.

Regardless of what anyone tells you, a diet that consists only of meat and fat is dangerous and unhealthful. Do not even care if someone loses weight with this method. Just completely discount it for health reasons. Meat and fat, if eaten in excess, and to the exclusion of everything that creates 'balance', can be downright dangerous for the health of your arteries, heart and digestive system.

So the only truly low carb foods to choose are those that have a low carbohydrate content, but are still healthy foods. One key element at play is processed vs. natural foods. While simple and complex carbohydrates may be comparable if you are 'counting', they are not, if you are interested in promoting good health, whether or not you are on a weight loss regime.

Simple carbohydrates include sugars from milk, from fruit and from 'sweets' such as baked goods, and candy, etc. You will rarely find desserts included in a list of particularly low carb foods. When they are allowed on weight loss diets, the portions are so small as to be called symbolic representations. It is still nice to get the taste, and no one needs to eat a large portion of anything in order to experience the enjoyable sensation that they generate.

For most diet regimes, whether they count calories are not, when choosing low carb foods for a diet one should consider three elements. The foods should be low in carbohydrates, low in calories, and the most nutritious, since the amount of food you are allowed to eat is limited. The purpose of this is to still maintain health without eating too much.

Having said all that, we must identify what foods are high carb, and avoid them, and also find the low carb foods, and eat enough of them so that we don't get cravings. This means a balancing act. It is not difficult as long as you know which is which, and you eat all things in moderation.

Personally, my eating is more controlled since I heard about a diet that you don't worry about what you are eating, but you don't eat anything unless you are hungry. When you are truly hungry, supposedly you can eat as much of whatever you want as you will. I believe in only the part about not eating at prescribed times whether you are hungry or not, just because it is 'lunch time' or 'dinner time'. However, it is too good to be true that you can eat a box of glazed donuts covered with chocolate icing, and not get fat, not to mention very unhealthy. The only thing more unhealthful is starvation. More fun to die of a donut overdose, to be sure.
