As important as knowing what and when to feed your new puppy, it is just as important to know what NOT to feed your puppy. Your puppy's overall health will be dependent on a proper and balanced diet. Allowing your puppy the wrong types of food can cause serious health problems. The following is things you should not allow for your puppy:
1. Do NOT feed your puppy different dog food than he is used to. Changing your puppy's usual food can cause puppy to have an upset tummy. Even though humans need variety in their diets, our canine companions do not, change in their diets can upset their delicate digestive system. Make sure you pick a dog food that is nutritionally balanced and stick with it.
2. Do NOT feed your puppy human food. This is even worse for your puppy than changing his dog food for his digestive system. Feeding your puppy human food can also create a very picky eater. In addition to the upset tummy, human food also is usually higher in calories than your puppy needs, this can cause obesity, which is not good for puppy's health. You should also especially not give your puppy bones. This can splinter and get lodged in puppy's throat, or once in the stomach can pierce the stomach lining.
3. To go along with not feeding your puppy human food, also do NOT allow anyone to feed your puppy from the table. This can cause some serious behavior problems that could be very hard to break. This could teach your puppy to beg which is a very nasty habit for a dog to have. It could also make puppy prone to stealing food when no one is looking, this is an even nastier habit.
4. Stick to your feeding routine, do NOT give your puppy between meal snack. This can lead to puppy being overweight, which as we already know is not good for puppy. You may give a small treat to your puppy during obedience training, for being a "good boy", but do not overdo this either.
5. Do NOT give puppy food that is intended for another type of pet, for example do not feed your puppy cat food. These types of food do not have the nutrition in them that your puppy requires.
6. One last note, do NOT feed your puppy human treats. Some treats, such as chocolate, can be toxic for a puppy, even in very small doses.
Choose your puppy's food based on its nutritional value and stick to it. Set up a feeding routine and stick to it. Do not allow puppy to have any thing else. This will make puppy happy and healthy.
